Environmentally Friendly Funerals

These days we are all increasingly aware of the impact that our lives have on the environment around us.

J. Worley Funeral Directors are careful to ensure that our services have as little negative impact on the environment as possible. All timber used in the construction of our coffins comes from renewable sources. Other materials used are specifically designed to be easily biodegradable or, in the case of cremation, combustible. For cremation, all materials used conform with the relevant emissions regulations laid down by the government and we will advise you of any items that are not suitable to be placed in the coffin with the deceased.

We offer as an alternative to timber coffins, willow and bamboo. These are constructed to the same high standards you would expect of all our coffins, and come from specialist suppliers who work carefully to ensure the sustainability of their materials.

We are able to offer burial in the local woodland site at Woodwells Cemetery, and can supply a horse-drawn hearse to carry the coffin to its final rest. For a more complete woodland burial site, we are happy to travel further afield to the Chiltern Woodland Burial Park at Beaconsfield, or other green burial sites in the surrounding areas.

We believe that what we do today should leave a lasting legacy for future generations, and that legacy should be a clean and beautiful environment.

More on woodland burials

Woodland burials normally take place in a dedicated burial ground or a designated section of an existing cemetery. In the borough of Dacorum, the only existing woodland burial section is at Woodwells cemetery, and is a naturally landscaped, fenced off area. No memorials are allowed, but after each burial, a tree is planted at the head of the grave.

In the case of Chiltern Woodland Burial Park, the area is a mature forest, which has been rededicated for woodland burials. A purpose-built chapel is available for services and small, wooden memorials can be placed on the graves.
